Social isolation is a huge factor for many mental health consumers. Many have lost their friends, may be disconnected from their families and their communities.
This manual developed by Mary Ellen Copelan has been written specifically for mental health organisations establishing or running community programmes in mind.
Community Links outlines how to match voluntary peers or community members with people who have involuntary treatment, including in the community, may be dependant on the mental health system for support; and/or are isolated within their communities.
Being treated involuntary brings up a whole range of experiences and emotions for many consumers - some positive and a lot not so positive. To have a peer or community member who can either ring or talk to the person in person can make a huge difference to how treatment is being perceived and/or received.
Peer support has been proven many times over to assist and support consumers to undertake their recovery journeys of choice, gain and/or maintain mental health wellbeing and also increase confidence, self esteem and social connection.
We as humans all want to feel we belong. We can make a difference to people's lives. Be the organisation that makes an impact and difference to the lives of the consumers who access your service by enabling peers and/or community members to participate and support and assist consumers recovery journeys of choice and reconnect with the community.
